Supplemental Feeding in Dogs

Exclusive and PMI Nutrition® diets are formulated to contain all the nutrients necessary to maintain optimum health in dogs. Normal, healthy dogs that are fed a complete and balanced diet do not require the addition of vitamins, minerals or other foods. In fact, supplemental feeding can actually be harmful to a dog that is eating a nutritionally complete diet by creating a nutrient imbalance. Research studies have shown that some nutrients can be toxic to a dog when eaten in excessive amounts. Furthermore, an unbalanced diet can result in growth problems, impaired normal bone development and numerous other physical and mental problems. Supplemental vitamins and/or minerals should only be given under the direction of a veterinarian.

Some dog owners' feel their dogs should have variety in their diets and so they feed table scraps, additional meat, or sources of fat. This practice can offset the balance of the diet and result in improper nutrient ratios. In addition, constant changes in the diet through regular feeding of supplemental food can cause stomach upsets and may result in a dog that is a finicky eater. In general, dogs perform best when fed the same diet every day as long as it is complete and balanced. One of the benefits of feeding a high quality, complete dog food such as Exclusive™ or PMI Nutrition® is knowing that it provides all the essential nutrients in the proper ratios without having to supplement.
