Q: Do I need to feed my dogs or cats more food in the winter if they live outdoors?

A: Yes. In order to keep warm during cold weather, dogs must “burn” more calories. In fact, most pets need considerably more calories to meet their maintenance requirements per pound of body weight when kept outdoors during the wintertime as compared with the summer months. Unless they are given additional food, they will lose weight and body condition. A cold animal is a stressed animal, and stressed animals are more likely to get ill. Be sure to keep your outdoor pets well-fed during the winter, and always be sure they have fresh, unfrozen water to drink.
